A business expansion could bring 100 jobs to Tuscarawas County by next year. Mayor Richard Homrighausen announced this week that Tremcar, a family-owned manufacturer of tank trailers based in Canada, with a manufacturing plant in Strasburg, will be expanding its operations to a building at the former Reeves Mill site. The mayor said the city’s Revolving Loan Fund Review Board has recommended that a low-interest loan of $200,000, as well as a three-year economic development electric rate, be extended to Tremcar. At the mayor’s request, City Council President Tim Tarulli assigned the matter to council’s Finance Committee for further study. Homrighausen said Tremcar, the fourth largest manufacturer of tank trailers in the United States, will be expanding its operations in Dover to a building in the Reeves Industrial Park, near the Tuscarawas River. In addition to hiring 60 employees by the end of this year, Homrighausen said the company is projecting hiring an additional 40 employees next year. The mayor said the Revolving Loan Fund Review Board held two meetings to discuss the city’s involvement with Tremcar’s expansion in Dover and “the feeling of the board is that this is a good use of Dover’s revolving loan fund monies, as well as an economic boost to the city from the projected employment and business activity.” Tremcar, he added, already is in the process of renovating the space it will be leasing in the Reeves Industrial Park, with a projected date of beginning its operations by the end of October. “Tremcar has $75 million in orders waiting for production to begin, therefore time is of the essence for the committee to meet and refer back to council of the whole for final action,” Homrighausen said. Tremcar, which began its operations in the Strasburg Industrial Park in May 2004, currently manufactures about 100 tanker trucks per year, according to Administrator Joseph House. The firm also repairs tanker trucks. House said the Dover facility will add to its business by manufacturing the barrels (aluminum tanks) for its DOT 407 trailers, which will be used to haul crude oil in the Western U.S. and in the local area. The finishing work on an expected 400 tankers per year will be performed in Strasburg. House noted that Earl Cindea of Canton has been recently hired to manage the Dover plant. House, a certified design engineer, will serve as administrator of both facilities. Shane Walters of New Philadelphia will continue serving as plant manager at Tremcar’s Strasburg facility, a position he has held since its opening in 2004.
