Member Profile

The Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation, Inc. (DEMEC) is a public power joint action agency and wholesale electric utility established in 1979 to provide power supply and related services to nine municipally-owned distribution utilities in the state of Delaware through owned generation assets and power purchased from other generators in the PJM region.

Members of DEMEC are the cities and towns of Clayton, Dover, Lewes, Middletown, Milford, New Castle, Newark, Seaford and Smyrna.  Collectively, they serve over 100,000 residents and businesses in their respective communities. In total DEMEC’s Members have a peak load over 450 Megawatts. DEMEC is a generation owner and the PJM Load Serving Entity (“LSE”) for seven of these municipal utilities (all except Lewes and Dover) and provides 100% of their wholesale power supply requirements.  We joined AMP in 2011 with the opportunity to participate in generation projects undertaken by the organization.

DEMEC, like other public power systems across the nation, is a leader in the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the communities we serve.  DEMEC has provided green energy products to its members since 2004, well before the Delaware Renewable Portfolio Standard became law.   Our goal of developing innovative and economic utility-scale, renewable energy generation projects includes the Dover SUN Park Project, a 10 megawatt PV solar generation facility located in Dover, Delaware; being the first wholesale electric utility in the nation to sign an outtake agreement for off-shore wind generation with our commitment to the Bluewater Wind Project in 2007; as well as pending agreements in several other renewable energy generation projects.

Our communities offer beautiful settings, quality highways, accessible waterways, up-to-date business parks, and much more.    To learn more about DMEC communities, we invite you to give us a call and arrange a visit.  We think you would be proud to call one of our member communities home.
