Columbus, Ohio, a thriving and growing metropolitan area, is the capital of Ohio. In recent years, we have become one of the five largest cities in the Midwest and one of the 25 largest cities in the United States. Located in the center of the nation’s population concentration, we offer a diverse economy ranging from education, government, and banking; to aviation, health care, and technology; and everything in between. We are home to The Ohio State University (the nation’s largest campus), Battelle Memorial Institute (world’s largest private research and development foundation), Port Columbus International Airport; and a vast array of recreation, cultural arts, and sporting events. Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) provides widespread municipal bus service; and bicycling has become an increasingly popular mode of transportation. In addition to our location and diversity, we are a top-notch technological community.
Columbus, Ohio, also offers an opportunity for public power – Columbus Power, which originated in 1899 when the voters elected to take control of street lighting. Voters decided that it would be less expensive to operate our own street lighting rather than pay a private utility to operate street lighting. Today, Columbus Power provides electricity to 14,000 consumers – residents, government buildings, businesses and industries.
