Advanced learning is available at Patrick Henry Community College, a two-year college located three miles north of Martinsville, and New College Institute who works with colleges and universities in Virginia to provide the second two years of a degree program. Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro are also within a 50 mile commute.

Greensboro, NC is approximately an hour drive south; Winston-Salem, NC is approximately 1 1/2 hours southwest; Durham, NC and Raleigh, NC, both southeast, are approximately 1 ¾ hours and 2+ hours by land respectively. Richmond, VA and Charleston, WV can both be reached in 3-4 hours. For longer commutes, Blue Ridge Airport is just 11 miles southwest of our city.
