What is a public power community?
A public power community is a city, town, village, borough or other local government entity that owns and operates its own electric utility. Instead of receiving electricity service from an investor-owned utility, the businesses and residents in these communities receive their electricity from the community’s electric system, which is owned by the people it serves through their local government.
AMP’s Member communities — 130+ communities in 9 states — have locally owned, not-for-profit utilities that provide competitively priced, sustainable and reliable power. When developers are making a site selection and considering available land and buildings, operational costs are a critical deciding factor. Public power utilities are operated by local governments who establish their electric rates based on the cost to serve.
